ABOUT THE INSTITUTE AND THE UNIT

Institut Pasteur of Shanghai (IPS) is an independent research institution jointly established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Institut Pasteur and Shanghai Municipal Government. IPS is dedicated to enhancing preparedness and responsiveness to infectious diseases through conducting cutting-edge research and sustained translation of solutions.

IPS has evolved three interdisciplinary research fields that cover pathogen biology, infection and immunity, vaccinology and immune therapy. IPS performs fundamental research on infectious diseases with unmet medical needs, emerging/reemerging viral, bacterial, fungal and parasite infections, immune regulation in metabolic disorders, tumorigenesis and degenerative diseases.

“Statistical Genomics of Bacterial Pathogens Unit” headed by Dr. Daniel Paul Falush, focuses on using genomic data to understand the world from the point of view of bacteria. What niches do they occupy? What challenges do they face? How do they use genetic variation to overcome those challenges? We will perform in depth studies of single bacterial species such as Helicobacter pylori and comparative studies of bacterial variation in hundreds of species as well as of microbial assemblages using metagenomics.

The unit is excited to be part of the newly formed Center for Microbes, Development and Health headed by Professor Philippe Sansonetti addresses the “post-modern, non-communicable epidemics” emerging in high-income regions, including high susceptibility of newborns to infections, and the developmental defects affecting populations in low-to-middle income regions, the focus being on the etiological role played by the ongoing global degradation of the human-microbial interface.

THE VACANCIES

The Unit is now seeking outstanding Post-docs, Research Assistants and Programmers

Position one: Post-doctoral researcher

We are looking for postdoctoral researcher to spearhead studies of genetic variation within Helicobacter pylori based on thousands of genomes from China and around the world, seeking to understand the genetic basis of pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance based on newly sequenced isolates.

Position 2 Post-doctoral researcher

We are developing statistical genetic methods for characterizing fitness interactions within natural bacterial populations. The researcher will develop algorithms and apply them to data from various bacterial species as well as simulated data.

Qualifications (for both positions):

-    Highly motivated and talented applicant with PhD (depending on the position) in population genetics, evolutionary biology, or statistical or other quantitative disciplines.

-    Computational and data mining skills
-    Excellent English communication skills and team spirit are required

Position three: Research Assistant

We are seeking to build up an evolutionary and population genetic database of bacterial variation, within which data from multiple bacterial species obtained from genomic and metagenomics data can be analyzed and queried using the same set of tools. The research assistant will be responsible for overseeing the development of the database and carrying out comparative genomic studies.

Qualifications:

-        A masters or Phd degree in a relevant discipline (salary will depend on qualifications).

-        Programming skills in at least two of R, SQL, C++, python

-        Relevant work experience.

-        Excellent English communication skills and team spirit.

Position four: Programmer

Job Description

We are seeking a programmer to support development of the bacterial database.

Qualifications:

-        A bachelor degree in computer science or any quantitative discipline and 4 years relevant work experience or masters degree and two years relevant work experience.

-        Knowledge of SQL, python. Experience with C++ and R advantageous.

-        Programming in scientific environment an advantage

-        Excellent English communication skills
